Building a report review process that doesn't bottleneck

Technical review is where reports stall. Ideas for keeping review rigorous and fast at the same time.

Make the queue visible

If reviewers can't see what's waiting, reports wait. A single queue sorted by age and priority does more than any reminder email.

Give corrections a home

  • Tie each correction to the section it's about, such as equipment, findings, or photos.
  • Keep corrections on the report, not in email threads.
  • Ask the technician to respond to each correction, not just resubmit.
  • Keep the history, so the next reviewer can see what changed.

Protect independence

The inspecting technician shouldn't approve their own report. Block it in the system rather than relying on policy.

Don't approve with open issues

Approval should stay locked while required fields are missing or corrections are still open. In NDT Pilot both conditions block approval, and approval records the signature, reviewer, and date.
